So the real decision you're making isn't which product — it's which contractor. Start with the paperwork, because it's the fastest filter there is. In Pennsylvania, home improvement contractors are required to register with the state Attorney General's office — the registration number (it looks like 'PA' followed by digits) should appear right on the estimate and contract, and you can verify it on the Attorney General's website in about a minute. Then ask for current certificates of insurance: general liability and workers' compensation. This isn't box-checking. Roofing is dangerous work, and if an uninsured worker gets hurt on your property, your homeowner's policy can become the backstop. A legitimate contractor has this paperwork ready and hands it over without flinching; hesitation is your answer.
Next, find out who will actually be on your roof. Some companies sell the job and subcontract the labor to whoever's available that week — which means the crew nailing your shingles has no relationship with the name on your contract. Ask directly: employees or subs? How long has the company worked in this area, under this name? Local matters for a reason beyond loyalty — a roofer with fifteen or twenty years of local roofs has a reputation you can check and an address you can knock on in year five. Read the recent reviews, and pay attention to how problems were handled, because every roofer eventually has one. Then judge the estimate itself, because the estimate predicts the roof. A real one starts with someone on your actual roof and in your attic — not a satellite photo and never a phone quote. It comes back to you written and itemized: tear-off and disposal, underlayment, ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys (non-negotiable in our climate), flashing, ventilation, how decking replacement is priced if rot turns up, cleanup, and the warranty terms — all spelled out. When you compare bids, compare that scope line by line rather than the bottom number alone. The cheapest quote is often cheapest because something you'll miss later isn't in it.
Now the red flags, learned from the homeowners who call us to fix what they bought. A knock on the door right after a storm, from a crew you didn't call. A price that's only good if you sign today — real quotes survive a week of thinking. A demand for a large cash deposit before a shingle moves. Any offer to 'cover' or 'waive' your insurance deductible — that's insurance fraud with your signature on the claim. No verifiable local address. A quote produced without anyone setting foot on the roof. And vagueness anywhere: about the crew, the schedule, the scope, or the warranty. None of these guarantees a disaster; all of them are how disasters introduce themselves.
Finally, understand the warranty you're actually getting, because it's two separate promises. The manufacturer warrants the shingles — but material defects are rare. The contractor warrants the workmanship — and installation error is the cause of most roof failures we're called to look at. That second warranty is only as good as the company behind it: a twenty-five-year workmanship promise from a company that changes its name every few seasons is worth the paper. Ask how long the workmanship warranty runs, what it covers, and — the question that matters most — whether the company answering the phone in year five will be the one that made the promise.
